Ninja Theory teases new ‘experimental’ horror game Project: Mara
Developer Ninja Theory is set to release its next project, competitive multiplayer game Bleeding Edge, and just announced a sequel to Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice for Microsoft’s next-gen Xbox. But the studio has at least one other project in the works, an “experimental” horror game called Project: Mara.
“ Project: Mara will be a real-world and grounded representation of true mental terror,” said Tameem Antoniades, co-founder of Ninja Theory, in a video announcing the project. “It will be based heavily on research, interviews, and firsthand accounts to recreate the horrors of the mind as accurately and believably as possible.”
Antoniades said the game will feature only “one character and one location,” calling it “an experimental project and a showcase of what could become a new immersive storytelling medium.”
A brief teaser for Project: Mara shows a woman in a dark space, clearly in distress. A terrifying looking doppelgänger then appears in the darkness.
In a developer diary in which Project: Mara is revealed, Antoniades also offers some insight into the story and themes of Senua’s Saga: Hellblade 2.
“While Hellblade gave us a very personal insight into psychosis, this sequel builds on that to show how madness and suffering shapes myths, gods, and religion,” Antoniades said. “Our goal is to make an experience comparable to the epic myths and sagas of old.”
Senua’s Saga: Hellblade 2 is being developed by a team twice the size of the original Hellblade, Antoniades said. You can watch the full developer diary in the video below.
